Fundraising

From HackAarhus

Jump to: navigation, search

The immediate need for fundraising has become less of an issue for HackÅrhus, since the formation of the organization Open Space Aarhus (OSAA), which will handle the aquisition and maintenance of a space and it's infrastructure. HackÅrhus "specific" equipment (Equipment needed/used only by HackÅrhus) will of course be purchased by HackÅrhus.. in time...

So most of the following, regarding getting a space, is therefore for inspiration for the OSAA.

Aim

The overall aim of fundraising is to have a space up and running. In detail money is needed to:

  • pay the one-off deposit for a space
  • pay for the rent of a space (incl. utilities etc.)
  • pay for necessary infrastructure (e.g. furniture, hardware, internet access, ...)

and later:

  • pay for additional hardware/machinery for projects (e.g. repraps, laser cutters, robots, ...)
  • fund specific project ideas, events and activities

Prerequisites // Action Steps

  • form an organization
  • get a bank account
  • define a goal

Goal

  • define a specific fundraising goal here: how much is necessary to kickstart the space (e.g. deposit + half year's rent)
  • make a progress bar showing the progress of all fundraising activities combined towards this goal

Fundraising Ideas

Start a Pledge

Start a public pledge on one of the pledge providers (i.e. pledge banks). E.g. "I will pay x DKK if y number people will agree to do the same." or "I will pay x DKK every month if y people will agree to do the same."

See also Threshold pledge system, Crowd funding and PledgeBank on Wikipedia.

Solicit pledges mainly from people close to Hack Aarhus (e.g. (prospective) members), but also people from outside who want to support our goals.

Purpose

mainly bootstrapping

"Buy a Pixel" Homepage

Sell pixels on a homepage to interesting parties, where they can do with it their screen real estate whatever they want (e.g. their logo, ads, ...). See wikipedia:The Million Dollar Homepage.

The homepage could be an entry page to www.hackaarhus.dk for a specified duration or reside at a subdomain and be prominently featured on the homepage or at a designated domain altogether. It is a more interesting idea than just having a page listing all the sponsors/supporters.

Furthermore when we do get a space we could make a large print and hang it on the wall - thus giving our sponsors even more incentive. And we could brag about our personal donations. ie "Thats the glider i bought for hack aarhus"

Purpose

mainly bootstrapping, but also sustainability if used as a list of sponsors/supporters.

Cigar Box

See https://labitat.dk/index.php/Cigar_box

Purpose

bootstrapping (mainly for the deposit and first rents)

Possible with a sticker as a "reward" - telling the world you lend Hack Århus X kroner. The sticker should have a URL promoting the idea of the Cigarbox.

Funds from Private Foundations

See https://labitat.dk/index.php/Fonde

Purpose

In genereal foundations don't support "sustainability" they do however support projects - which could land us some gear we could use. We might have a "external"-project pay us rent

Membership Fees

Only take membership fees if there is something offered in return (e.g. a space) -- no advance payments. Maybe have non-paying members or other membership models.
